A charge is a price asked for any kind of service. On food aggregators, there can be different charges that can be levied for the service provided, a couple of them being:
delivery charge: for delivering the food to your home by the aggregator.
packaging charge: for neatly packing your food so it stays fresh.
A combination of multiple charges can also be applied to the same product or order subtotal.
Here, the restaurant is collecting a packaging charge from the consumer for packing the food in containers.
A charge can be calculated either on a percentage basis or a fixed charge basis with combination of this charge being added on every product or on the bill subtotal.
Let's take an example of 2 items, Burger(price: Rs100/-) and Fries(price: Rs50/-) and understand the possible combinations of charges that can be levied. Here, the bill subtotal would be Rs150/- and a charge based on the type will be added to the subtotal.
Fixed Charge on product: Let's assume we have a fixed packaging charge of Rs10/- on every item, the bill total would be; subtotal of Rs150+Rs20(Rs10 packaging charge on each item) making a sum total of Rs170/-
Fixed Charge on order subtotal: Let's assume we have a fixed delivery charge of Rs30/- on every order, the bill total would be; subtotal of Rs150+Rs30(Rs30/- delivery charge on the order) making a sum total of Rs180/-
Percentage Charge on product: Let's assume we have 5% packing charge on every item, the bill total would be; subtotal of Rs150+Rs 7.5(Rs5/- and Rs2.5/- being added at 5% on each item) making a sum total of Rs157.5/-.
Percentage Charge on order subtotal: Let's assume we have a 10% delivery charge on every order, the bill total would be; subtotal of Rs150+Rs15(Rs15 being the 10% calculated on order subtotal) making a sum total of Rs165/-.
Swiggy supports only a fixed item level packaging charge through the integration. in case a merchant wants a charge to be applied on the cart subtotal, they would have to reach out to their Swiggy POC to get it configured. Furthermore, there is no support for levying taxes on packaging charges.
Zomato supports charges at the cart level as well as at the item level & this charge could be either a percentage or fixed. In the case of packaging charge, the title of the charge should always be "Restaurant Packaging Charges". It is also possible, on Zomato to levy taxes on packaging charge.
